PET DERMATOLOGY & ALLERGY CARE IN DAINGERFIELD, TEXAS
Skin problems and itching are some of the most common reasons for pets to see the veterinarian.
Not only is the itching annoying for your pet, the scratching, licking, and chewing can cause wounds, and then infections.
We understand how frustrating it is to see your pet constantly licking, scratching, and suffering from ongoing skin and ear issues. Figuring out what the problem is, and getting your pet some relief, is our top priority.
COMMON ALLERGIES & SKIN CONDITIONS
- Ear infections, especially in floppy eared pets. Often secondary to allergies or out of control yeast growth.
- Flea allergy – a hypersensitivity to fleas. Even when you use flea medication to kill fleas, that one bite from a flea before the flea dies, can cause your pet to experience a hypersensitive reaction.
- Contact dermatitis – irritation from surfaces like grass, cleaning/laundry products, and plastics like plastic food & water dishes.
- Environmental allergies like pollen, mold, dust, and other airborne irritants.
- Sweet itch – allergic reaction to blood sucking insects like midges.
- Food allergies
TREATMENT PLAN
We personalize your pet’s treatment plan to help give them welcome relief from their skin and allergy problems.
ALLERGY TESTING
Testing is available to find out exactly what is making your cat, dog, or horse miserable.
We draw some blood, send it to the lab, and they can give us results on which allergens that your pet is reacting to.
For cats & dogs, testing can identify both environmental allergens (pollen, grass, dust mites, etc.) and food allergens.
For horses, testing can identify allergens found in the environment.
Allergy testing can be done with or without immunotherapy.
IMMUNOTHERAPY
Immunotherapy is a specific treatment, custom made for your pet, based on the results of your pet’s allergy testing.
Immunotherapy involves giving your pet either injections, or oral medication, that contains the allergens that your pet is found to be allergic to.
Immunotherapy, also called desensitization therapy, retrains your pet’s immune system, with the goal of getting your pet’s immune system to stop reacting to the allergen.
Immunotherapy is NOT a quick fix. It takes time to retrain your pet’s immune system to stop reacting to the allergens. We may also recommend that your pet take medications to help decrease the allergy symptoms, while they are on the immunotherapy.
