EQUINE VACCINATIONS
Immunizations for horses, donkeys, and mules fall into two categories, core vaccines and risk-based vaccines.
Core vaccines are vaccinations that are recommended for all horses, due to the high risk of serious illness and even death. Including risk to human health from diseases that people can get too. Core vaccines should be given every year, to every horse.
RABIES is a deadly disease that is found in our wildlife, and even in domestic animals like equines. It does NOT take a bite to be exposed to rabies!
There is no cure for rabies. Once symptoms start, rabies is fatal.
Equines, cats, dogs, ferrets, and some other farm/large animals should receive a RABIES VACCINATION EVERY YEAR!

TETANUS is treatable, but at great expense, and can still cause death even with treatment.
In recent years we have had manufacturer shortages of the tetanus antitoxin, which is part of the treatment for tetanus. Get your equines vaccinated for Tetanus yearly!

EASTERN AND WESTERN EQUINE ENCEPHALOMYELITIS (EEE/WEE)
Spread by mosquitoes, people can be infected too. Can be fatal or require euthanasia. EEE and WEE should be given every year to every horse!
————————-
WEST NILE VIRUS
WNV is also spread by mosquitoes. WNV can also spread to humans by mosquito bites. WNV should be given to every horse, every year, to protect your horses and your family & friends!
Non-Core Vaccinations
Other vaccinations for your equines may be recommended, based on their risk of contracting an illness, as well as the risk of the disease passing to/from other horses, and people.
Other vaccinations that may be recommended include
- Influenza (spread by coughing & can travel half a football field length to infect horses)
- Leptospirosis (spread by contact with infected urine/urine contaminated items, found in wildlife, can also infect dogs and humans)
- Strangles
- Equine Herpesvirus – EHV
- Botulism
- Equines Viral Arteritis – EVA
- Potomac Horse Fever
- Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis
- Rotavirus
- Anthrax
- Snake Bite
Get with us to work up a plan to keep your equines up to date on vaccinations. Remember, it is much easier and less expensive financially, and emotionally, to vaccinate, than it is to have your equines come down with these diseases.
